Guided Questions (Zakaria Reading - Feb 20 & 22)

Students:

Use these questions as a guide to the chapters you are reading this week.  See you next Monday.  Don't forget, you can collect your exams in the Intl Programs mail/copy room on the 2nd floor of Ryals!

Chapter 5 - "The Ally"

  • Describe India's historical development in the twentieth century, paying particular attention to how politics and economic development underscored its society.
  • What is meant by 'the eagle and the cow'?  Why is this terminology culturally relevant?  How do we compare it to China's metaphor of being a 'sleeping dragon'?
  • What is the 'Hindu worldview'?
  • Describe India's 'geographic expression.'
Chapter 6 - "American Power"
  • Zakaria outlines several characteristics of 'American power'.  They are: 'the future is here,' 'best industry,' and 'learning to think'.  Explain these characteristics.  Do you agree or not?  Why?
  • What does the author mean by 'The Hollowing Out of the Middle?'  Explain.
Chapter 7 - "American Purpose"
  • What is the author's purpose of this chapter?  Explain.
  • Zakaria outlines rules of a 'new age':
    1. Choose
    2. Build roads, not narrow interests
    3. Be Bismark, not Britain
    4. Order a la care
    5. Think asymmetrically
    6. Legitimacy is power
    • Describe each of these 'rules' and establish an argument as to why or not these suggestions are legitimate.
Best wishes from Washington, DC!
