Chapter 5 - "The Ally"
- Describe India's historical development in the twentieth century, paying particular attention to how politics and economic development underscored its society.
- What is meant by 'the eagle and the cow'? Why is this terminology culturally relevant? How do we compare it to China's metaphor of being a 'sleeping dragon'?
- What is the 'Hindu worldview'?
- Describe India's 'geographic expression.'
Chapter 6 - "American Power"
- Zakaria outlines several characteristics of 'American power'. They are: 'the future is here,' 'best industry,' and 'learning to think'. Explain these characteristics. Do you agree or not? Why?
- What does the author mean by 'The Hollowing Out of the Middle?' Explain.
Chapter 7 - "American Purpose"
- What is the author's purpose of this chapter? Explain.
- Zakaria outlines rules of a 'new age':
- Choose
- Build roads, not narrow interests
- Be Bismark, not Britain
- Order a la care
- Think asymmetrically
- Legitimacy is power
- Describe each of these 'rules' and establish an argument as to why or not these suggestions are legitimate.
